Alvar Aalto’s Iconic Vase Collection | New Colour
An iconic design from one of the world’s most respected designers, Iittala have launched Alvar Aalto’s vase collection in a brand new colour for this year. Referencing natural flax fields, Iittala’s annual colour for 2020, linen, was crafted from a unique combination of pigments with a high natural lustre, highlighting the sculptural form of the vase. The colour is infused within the glass at the time of sculpting, ensuring optimum vibrancy.
Throughout the 1930s, revered designer and architect, Alvar Aalto, developed a significant collection of decorative objects, his iconic vase collection has become an icon of Twentieth Century design and a staple of modern Scandinavian interiors. A diversion from the clean lines and geometry of modernism, Aalto’s vase collection adopts a rounder and softer visual language, featuring organic shapes inspired by the undulating waves of the Baltic Sea, surrounding his native Finland.
Compelled by his passion for glass, Aalto was consistently searching for innovative ways to work with the material. Today Iittala produce the vases with the same craftmanship and technique as the originals. Each individual vase is mouthblown at the Iittala Glass Factory in Finland according to Aalto’s drawings, making every one unique.
