Meet a true icon of contemporary design: the six-cup espresso coffee maker by Richard Sapper for Alessi.

More than just a coffee maker, this piece tells the story of Sapper’s unique vision—an architect and engineer who believed that everyday objects should combine technical precision with emotional warmth. Known for his rigorous approach to function and form, Sapper reimagined the traditional stovetop espresso maker with clean architectural lines and thoughtful detailing, creating something both timeless and quietly revolutionary.

Made in polished 18/10 stainless steel, its elegant cylindrical body is balanced by a distinctive cast iron handle – chosen not only for its durability but for its tactile contrast, a signature of Sapper’s work. Every element is purposeful, reflecting his belief that good design should be intuitive, enduring, and deeply satisfying to use.

This design earned international acclaim, receiving the prestigious Compasso d'Oro in 1979 – one of the most respected honours in industrial design. It also marked a milestone for Alessi as their first object to enter the permanent design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Elegant yet practical, sculptural yet functional, this espresso maker is more than a kitchen essential – it’s a piece of design history, created by one of the great minds of modern industrial design.

Crafted in 18/10 stainless steel with a magnetic base suitable for induction, the 9090/6 produces approximately 6 cups (300 ml) of espresso. Measuring 20.5 cm in height with a 12.5 cm diameter, it features Richard Sapper’s signature lever-lock mechanism, anti-drip spout, and heat-efficient wide base.
