Eolie Pendant Lights

Designed by Alberto and Francesco Meda for Foscarini, this trio of pendant lights pay homage to the volcanic Aeolian Islands, just north of Sicily: Alicudi, Filicudi and Panarea. This set of striking suspension lamps are crafted from recycled black lava stone, a project that combines experimentation and sustainability, transforming scrap material from the earth that would normally go to waste. Embodying the rugged nature of lava, each light shade features variegated porous surfaces and craters characteristic of the stone. Crafted by expert artisans, each light is sculpted into its unique form, the result is a design with irreplaceable variations on every piece. Unlike marble, lava is not quarried, but gathered directly from the mountain after being expelled from the volcano.

 “After an eruption the magma settles, becoming part of the terrain and forming blocks of lavic stone that can be crafted. The cutting process generates a large quantity of surplus chips, which we wanted to salvage and transform into lighting.” Francesco Meda
