Few chairs in the history of design have achieved what the Egg Chair has. Designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen – where every detail, from the architecture to the cutlery, was conceived by Jacobsen – the Egg was created to give hotel guests a sense of privacy in the open lobby. Its enveloping, cocoon-like shell, raised on a slender aluminium base, achieved something rare: a chair that is immediately recognisable from any angle, and yet never tires.

Manufactured by Fritz Hansen to the same exacting standards as the original, each Egg Chair is hand-assembled in Denmark. The shell is formed from moulded combipur foam with tricot wadding, upholstered by hand and mounted on a polished aluminium swivel base. This version is upholstered in Re Wool by Kvadrat — a contemporary fabric blending 45% recycled wool, 45% new wool, and 10% nylon, combining sustainability with the warmth and texture of traditional wool.

About the Designer

Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) was Denmark’s most celebrated architect and designer. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he worked across architecture, furniture, textiles, and industrial design with a rigour and coherence that few designers have matched. The Egg, the Swan, the Ant, and the Series 7 – all designed for Fritz Hansen – remain among the most recognised objects in twentieth-century design.
